' County Extension Chairman R. M. Thompson said the meet ing would be part of a series of similar meetings "scheduled across North Carolina. Objective of the meetings, M". Thompson explained, is to let local people' share their ideas with the college: officials and to get a report on the college's ag ricultural activities. Participants from the college will include Dr. H. Brooks James, dean of the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences; R. W. Shoffner, director of foun dations; Dr. George Hyatt, Jr., director of the N. C. Agricul tural Extension Service; Dr. K. R. Keller, assistant director of the N. C. Department of Commerce, in Perquimans County, will bring up to date farm statistics last collected in 1959. Here are a few of the many facts recorded in the 1959 farm census - for this county: There were 686 farms in 1959, compared with 888 in 1954. The average size of farm was 127.7 acres in 1959, compared with 99.3 acres in 1954. The value of products sold by the county's farmers in 1959 was $4,060,388. The value of all crops sold was $2,988,105. The value of all livestock and live stock products sold in the county was $1,072,283. v The 1964 national' Census.' -of Agriculture is the 18th in a series whirl beftan, in 1840. .' Be cause of the rapid changes Am erican ' agriculture ha been un dergoing in recent yean, Cen sus Bureau officials regard the current census as one of the most significant ever taken. They ask every farmer to co operate in compiling an accur ate record of these changes by filling out the census form he receives in the mail and holding the" completed questionnaire un til a census taker calls for it. Mail Boxes In It has been reported that within the past week seven ru ral mail boxes in this county have been damaged by being blown up or ust torn up. This is a serious offense and carries a stiff penalty if the guilty one or ones are apprehended. -; Hertford' Postmaster W. W. "Bill" White stated today it was not his desire to cause any one any trouble, but the. maij box vandalism has been report ed to the Post Office Depart ment in Atlanta, Ga for inves tigation. . -. -It is hoped that this news re. 'ease will be a warning to otl crs who may harbor ideas, of fun .in damaginB, rural 'mail boxes, as the responsible, parties tor , the ones already damaged here will be found and in all probability the guilty ones will have to pay dearly for their foolish pranks, ' AATIIKV Census Up Dates County Damaged A glance at the advertisement! in this issue of The Perquimans Weekly will give some idea of the preparation the Hertford merchants have made for Christmas sales, determined to make it unnecessary to shop out of town.
